Patrick Was Soaked in the Word — And It Changed a Nation
Most people know Patrick as the man who drove the snakes out of Ireland. They know the shamrock. They know the 17th of March. But there's something far more important about Patrick that nobody really talks about. Something that made him who he was. Something that gave him the power to do what he did.
Patrick was soaked in the word of God.
Before the Mission, There Was the Wilderness
Before Patrick was a missionary, he was a slave. Taken from his home as a teenager, he spent six years on the hills of Ireland tending sheep. And it was there, in that loneliness and hardship, that he found God. Or rather, God found him. He prayed. He read. He listened. And by the time God called him back to Ireland, Patrick wasn't just a man with a mission — he was a man filled with scripture.
That's not a small thing. That's everything.
139 Bible Quotes in Two Short Writings
Patrick was guided by the Holy Spirit and the word of God. In his two short writings, he quoted the Bible 139 times. Patrick knew his Bible. He used his Bible. The Bible says that your word is a lamp to my feet and a light unto my path. Patrick was soaked in the scriptures. His reference was the scriptures, because he knew that the Bible points to God.
And if you want to know about God, you need to go to the Bible. There's no point going to tradition. There's no point going to your local priest, your local pastor, or whoever else. You need to go straight to the source. The source is the word of God.
Patrick quoted 23 out of the 27 books of the New Testament in his short writings. You can read them online — Patrick's Confession. Here was a man used by God, because he knew the word of God.
What This Means for Christians in Ireland Today
And that's the challenge for us today — here in Ireland, in Cork, in our homes and our communities.
If you want to be strong in your faith, you need to be in the word. Not just on Sundays. Not just when things get tough. Every day. The same way Patrick was immersed in scripture, you need to immerse yourself. Read it in the morning. Read it at night. Let it get into your heart, into your thinking, into the way you see the world. Because when the Bible gets into you, God gets into you. And when God gets into you, things change — in your life, in your family, in your community.
Patrick didn't change Ireland because he was special. He changed Ireland because he was surrendered — to God and to His word.
