Patrick knew his Bible. He used his Bible. The Bible says that your word is a lamp to my feet and a light unto my path. Patrick was soaked in the scriptures. His reference was the scriptures, because he knew that the Bible points to God.And if you want to know about God, you need to go to the Bible. There's no point going to tradition. There's no point going to your local priest, your local pastor, or whoever else. You need to go straight to the source. The source is the word of God.Patrick quoted 23 out of the 27 books of the New Testament in his short writings. You can read them online — Patrick's Confession. Here was a man used by God, because he knew the word of God.&nbsp; What This Means for Christians in Ireland TodayAnd that's the challenge for us today — here in Ireland, in Cork, in our homes and our communities.If you want to be strong in your faith, you need to be in the word. Not just on Sundays. Not just when things get tough. Every day. The same way Patrick was immersed in scripture, you need to immerse yourself. Read it in the morning. Read it at night. Let it get into your heart, into your thinking, into the way you see the world. Because when the Bible gets into you, God gets into you. And when God gets into you, things change — in your life, in your family, in your community.Patrick didn't change Ireland because he was special. An excerpt from our weekly bible discussion on the book of Revelation&nbsp;<h3> The word "apocalypse" might sound scary, but it actually means "an unveiling."</h3>I like to think of it like walking into a theater just before a show. The big curtains are closed in front of the stage, and then they pull them back to reveal what you hadn't seen before. That's what the book of Revelation is—an unveiling. God is pulling back the curtain to give us a glimpse of heaven. It's supernatural. It's spectacular. And as always, it's about the Lord God Almighty.Let's be clear from the start: Jesus is fully God and fully man. He's as much God as the Father and the Holy Spirit. This book is unveiling Him because He's going to come back. He's going to judge His enemies, destroy them, and then set up His kingdom—and we're going to be part of it.But here's the thing: in the meantime, He's telling us we're going to have to endure. That's the other big part of this book. It's not escapism. It's endurance.&nbsp; "Must Soon Take Place"—Really? The text says these things must soon take place. It was written around 90 AD, and here we are, 2,000 years later. How do we wrap our heads around that?Simple. We have to be ready for the return of Christ, and yet we still carry on with daily life. We still go to work—just like the Thessalonians. We're not supposed to stop working because Jesus is coming back. You still go to work. You still do what you have to do every day: feed your kids, take them to school, clean your house. But in our hearts and minds, we're ready.<h3>&nbsp; A Promise You Won't Find Anywhere Else</h3> Look at verse three. It says:"Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near."There's a blessing in reading this book that isn't promised anywhere else in the Bible. That excites me. I know that because it's apocalyptic literature, people are a bit afraid of it. But don't be afraid. Read it. Read it through again and again. Take notes. And I guarantee you, it will become clearer and clearer as you go.The word "blessed" could also mean happy, fortunate, or to be envied. And here's something to watch for: there are seven blessings in this book. Actually, as you go through Revelation, you'll see the number seven come up a lot. The seven churches, the seven spirits, seven trumpets, seven seals. Seven means completeness. So there's a lot of numerology and symbolism—but don't let that intimidate you.<h3>&nbsp; Who Is This Book Really About?</h3> Whether it's a New York Times bestseller about the mark of the beast, a Hollywood movie, or even Christian literature focusing on the Antichrist—the focus of this book is Jesus. Not the Antichrist.The focus is for us to know what's going to happen in the future, to be ready, and when persecution does come, that we won't fall away. There's a lot of warning in these pages, but it all points back to Him.Notice how it begins: "The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave Him." God the Father gave it to Jesus to show His servants what must soon take place. It wasn't given to Daniel or someone else—it was given directly to Jesus. That's what makes it so significant.<h3>&nbsp; The Man Who Saw It All</h3> Remember who wrote this. John was a very old man at this point, probably in his 90s. He was on the island of Patmos, which was a prison island. You think after serving God for so long, why endure more suffering? But ultimately, it was for the glory of God and for his reward. History tells us he led many people to Christ on that rocky, barren island.John also wrote the Gospel of John, 1, 2, and 3 John. God specifically chose him. He's the only gospel writer who continuously emphasizes the divinity of Jesus. The other Gospels focus more on teaching and how to follow Christ. John's purpose was to show Jesus as God.By this time, all the other disciples had been martyred. John was the only one left alive. And he didn't just have a dream—he had a vision. At one point, Jesus actually touched him. He was transported into heaven. We can't fully comprehend that, but that's what an unveiling means.<h3>&nbsp; A Message for Seven Churches—And for Us</h3> John, to the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from Him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.This is a real, historical document written to seven actual churches in the province of Asia—modern-day Turkey. These weren't denominations. They were seven individual churches. Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.Here's something worth pondering: these churches were in one province. They weren't far from each other. They could have said, "Let's unite together—we'll be stronger. We'll have one head over us." Our human tendency is to want one person to dominate over us. But that's actually the Antichrist's role. That's how he'll present himself: "I'll look after you physically, emotionally, spiritually, economically. You just have to worship me."Jesus has churches all over the world. He doesn't have one church that dominates all the others. Each church is individual. Each church is autonomous. Every church is under Christ, and the Bible is our template—for how we do church and how we organize.And because seven means completeness, this message isn't just for them. It's for us in 2025. As we look at the seven churches, we see ourselves. Jesus addresses each church, pointing out the good and the bad. It's quite convicting to read.Take Ephesus, for example. They had lost their first love. You can go to church, read your Bible, preach, and do all sorts of things—but if you lose your love for Jesus, how good is that? I don't want that. But it can happen so easily.<h3>&nbsp; Grace and Peace—From the Eternal One</h3> Grace and peace to you from Him who is, and who was, and who is to come.Our minds can't fully comprehend that, but we know there is one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.Then it mentions "the seven spirits before His throne." This could be a symbolic way of describing the complete Holy Spirit—seven representing completeness. Or it could refer to seven actual spirits before the throne of God. There are some things in Revelation where I can't be dogmatic, because it is a challenging book to understand in every detail. But the big picture is what matters most. If you don't get bogged down in the smaller details, you'll be fine. If you do, you'll end up going down a rabbit hole.<h3>&nbsp; The Faithful Witness</h3> Jesus is called "the faithful witness." We are called to be witnesses too. The word martyr comes from the word witness. As we speak, there are many around the world being killed for Jesus. For such a time as this, God has placed us here. We want to be faithful witnesses.And who are we witnesses of? It's Jesus. Not the Republican party. Not nationalism. Not a denomination. Not Calvinism. Not Pentecostalism. If we keep our eyes on Jesus, it will go a long way. I'm a witness to Jesus. He's the one who saved me.We're to love God's people. Love the church. But we are witnesses with the Lord Jesus Christ, not witnesses for the church. Witnesses for the Lord Jesus Christ.<h3>&nbsp; Firstborn from the Dead</h3> He is "the firstborn from the dead," which means He is the first. Every one of us will die, but He will never die again. He already died. When we are raised, we will be like Him. He had a real physical body—He said, "Touch me." He spoke with them, and He could disappear. When He went back to heaven, it wasn't at the edge of the universe.That expression, "firstborn from the dead," doesn't mean He was the first created. It means He is the second Adam, the new head of humanity.<h3>&nbsp; The Ruler of the Kings of the Earth</h3> I love this part. It says to me that I don't have to be afraid of the ruler of any country or any nation, because Jesus is the ultimate ruler. If I am allowed to go through suffering or die for Jesus, it's because God has allowed it. And if He doesn't save me from it, He will still save me. Like Daniel's three friends said: "If our God saves us, He will. But even if He doesn't, we will not worship the false god."<h3>&nbsp; Freed from Our Sins</h3> To Him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by His blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve His God and Father—to Him be glory and power forever and ever! Amen.That's a lovely way of putting the gospel: freed us. We've been set free. And it says, "To Him who loves us." It's good to hear that. Jesus loves us. He likes us.Sometimes I don't feel it, but I do believe it. Maybe a lot of the time I don't feel it emotionally. But He actually does love us. He knows each of us by name. He knows everything about us. If you had that revelation settled in your soul, you really wouldn't have anything to worry about for the rest of your life.<h3>&nbsp; He Is Coming with the Clouds</h3> "Look, He is coming with the clouds," and "every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him"; and all peoples on earth will mourn because of Him. So shall it be! Amen.This references two Old Testament passages. One is Daniel 7:13. The person described as the Messiah in Daniel is the same person described here. The second part comes from Zechariah 12:10.The peoples on earth will mourn, but not because they're sorry. They'll mourn because they know the game is up. He is coming back. You hear it every day—people cursing His name. I can never get over that. Of all the names in the world, He's the one they always curse, whether they're from China, Ireland, Jamaica, or anywhere else.Just as powerful as the love of God is, the wrath of God is equally powerful.<h3>&nbsp; The Alpha and the Omega</h3> "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."Alpha and Omega—the beginning and the end. He is everything. All things were made through Him. Nothing was made that has been made without Him. Nothing can get past Him. Nothing can happen except that He knows it. May that comfort us and strengthen us, whatever we're going through today.<h3>&nbsp; John on Patmos</h3> I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.He was exiled to Patmos, a colony for political prisoners of the Roman Empire. And look at the reason: because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.There's nothing under the sun you can talk about as a Christian that will get you in trouble—just don't mention the Bible. Don't mention Jesus. You can give someone seven principles for living a good life, and they'll say, "Oh, that's lovely." You can share Proverbs with them. But the moment you hold up the Bible as the authoritative word of God, you get persecuted—often by so-called Christians. And the moment you lift up Jesus Christ as the Son of God, the only one who can save you from your sins, people push back.Nothing has changed in 2,000 years. The reason John was put on Patmos was because the Roman emperor demanded to be worshipped as a god, and John said no.Nowadays, people want to be their own god. "No one tells me what to do." It's really true.<h3>&nbsp; The Vision of the Son of Man</h3> I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.When John saw Him, he fell at His feet as though dead. But Jesus placed His right hand on him and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades."<h3>&nbsp; What It All Means</h3> The seven lampstands? They're the seven churches. The seven stars? They're the angels—or messengers—of the churches.A lampstand, like the menorah in the temple, brought light. And the churches are the same: we too are called to be light to the world. Jesus said, "You are the light of the world." What brings light is the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. That's the church's number one way of bringing light into this world.And notice where Jesus is standing: among the lampstands. He is among His churches. We believe by faith that our church is one of the churches that belongs to Jesus, so He is among us too. The important thing for us to take from this is that we keep our fire burning for Him. We love Him. We are responsive to Him.<h3>&nbsp; A Few Final Thoughts</h3> The description of Jesus is powerful: His hair white like wool—not blonde hair and blue eyes. His eyes like blazing fire. His feet like bronze glowing in a furnace. His voice like rushing waters. Out of His mouth a sharp double-edged sword.He is the Word of God. When He comes back in chapter 19, He simply speaks, and His enemies are destroyed.And He holds the keys of death and Hades. The devil does not hold those keys—Jesus does. He's the one who judges where people will go.Then He tells John: "Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later." Chapter one covers what he has seen. Chapters two and three cover what is now—the messages to the churches. And from chapter four onward, we read what will take place in the future.<h3>&nbsp; One Last Thing</h3> About those seven stars—the angels of the churches. The word "angel" means "messenger." It could mean a heavenly being assigned to each church, or it could mean a human messenger, perhaps one of the elders. I actually don't know which it is. And you know what? That's okay.As you go through your Christian life, there will be some things you just have to say, "I don't know." The important thing is to pray about it and ask God to show you. He doesn't want us to live in uncertainty, but it's also okay not to have all the answers. These little difficulties never make a difference to the essentials of your faith. Usually, the significant things are clear.And the most significant thing of all? Jesus is standing among His churches. He loves us. He freed us from our sins. And He's coming back.Now that's worth reading, hearing, and keeping.

Unveiling Jesus: A First Look at Revelation Chapter 1

<h3>When I grew up in north Cork,</h3>there was plenty of religion. You know, if you’re Irish, there’s loads of religion in Ireland—but what I didn’t have when I grew up, which I’ve come to know now, is that you can have a relationship with God that is so vastly different from religion. Man‑made religion is a set of do’s and don’ts, it’s a set of rules, and it’s not personal. It’s not engaged with a living God; you’re not in a relationship with the living God. And as I grew up in Cork and started to enter into my adult years, it was then that I wanted to know the truth—real truth, spiritual truth: Who is God? Can I know him? Does he know me? That’s when I came across Jesus, the one I read about in the New Testament in the Bible.<h3>Ephesians</h3>One of the books in the Bible in the New Testament is called the book of Ephesians, and it was written by Paul when he was in jail in Rome. It was written to an Ephesian church, a small church in Ephesus, which is in modern‑day Turkey. The primary purpose of the letter—which is inspired ultimately by the Holy Spirit through the Bible—was to remind the Christians there, to remind those who believed in Jesus Christ, that it was because God had loved them and because God desired to save them and desired to be in a relationship with them that he sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross to pay for their sins—past, present, and future. This was an amazing revelation to me. It went on to say that God would now become your Father if you believed in Jesus; that God would adopt you into his family; that you would have eternal life. That was such good news, because all I believed before was that, whether you’re religious or not, you just die and that’s the end—and maybe even you go to hell, because I was never good enough to get into heaven.The Bible says that’s true: it says that all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory. So as I went about my life in Cork and as a student in UCC, I began to wonder, “Well, how can I get saved? How can I have eternal life? Is this Jesus true? Is he who he says he is?” And to my absolute joy and wonder and amazement, Jesus began to reveal himself to me through the Scriptures as I read the Bible—especially the New Testament. I began to see him, and as I said in this book of Ephesians, I saw the amazing promises of the resurrected Jesus: the fact that Jesus has defeated death, that he didn’t stay in the grave but only stayed there three days, that God raised him from the dead, that he went back—after meeting his disciples for forty days—back into heaven. And the Bible says that in heaven he intercedes for us, that he’s proclaiming and saying to the Father and to the Holy Spirit, “My blood pays for Barry’s sins—past, present, and future.” And that is really good news. As you read through the book of Ephesians, you see that it’s God’s intention in the book that you and I understand the amazing depth of his love, the height and the width and the breadth of this amazing love. <h3>God speaks about his grace</h3>and grace is something that’s given to people who don’t deserve it. We don’t deserve God’s grace; I don’t deserve God’s grace. It was given to me because of God’s kindness and mercy and love. Yet you also see his justice in this: that sin has to be punished, that my sin has to be paid for, and your sin has to be paid for. This is a spiritual truth; this is something grounded in the very personality and in the heart of God—that there has to be justice. So how can God both forgive and also uphold justice? We see it at the cross, because what God says and what he wants us to understand is that there has to be payment for sin. So Jesus paid for that sin with his blood; he died a brutal and horrible death. And now, instead, he can forgive you and me. There is an exchange, as it were: your sin, my sin, all the wrongdoings—every thought, every action that’s wicked and evil—is put onto Christ, and God punishes Jesus. So the cross shows the punishment of sin in Christ, and yet it also shows the love and mercy of God in Christ. For Jesus now says, “I give my righteousness, my perfect moral character, to those who believe in me—anyone who believes in me.” So Jesus has given his perfect moral character to Barry Condon, and I just have to believe in him. I have to repent of my sin, of my sinful life, my life of living in independence from the most high God, the Holy One of Israel, the one who is from everlasting to everlasting. And he has revealed himself to me, and he says, “Anyone who seeks him will find him.” So if you seek God, you will find him. Don’t take my word for it; call out to God, pray to God, ask God about Jesus. I guarantee you 100 percent that Jesus will reveal himself to you. Jesus reveals himself to people all over the world; he’s saving people in Cork, he’s saving people in Ireland, he’s saving people all over the world. This is the gospel. It’s good news. It’s relational: by the power and the ministry of the Holy Spirit, we can come to know the living God.<h3>Jesus our only Hope&nbsp;</h3>Ephesians is such a wonderful book. It speaks about, as I mentioned earlier, God’s amazing grace. And if we understand the grace of God, we will then be eternally grateful. Because you see, in the eyes of God and according to the word of God, every one of us deserves condemnation. Every one of us has been handed over to sin and under the rule of Satan. Every one of us falls short of his glory. Therefore, in ourselves, we are without hope in this world; we are dead in our sins and transgressions. And when we start from that point, we realize that we are hopeless—that all the religion, and all our own efforts, are filthy rags before God and mean nothing to God in terms of earning salvation. We cannot earn our salvation; we cannot merit it in any way, shape, or form. When you go to work, whether in Bailey’s Garage, Bailey’s Hay, Carragher Line, or Cork city, you go to work and you earn your wages, and you’re paid because you’ve earned them. God says you cannot earn eternal life; you cannot earn your salvation; you cannot earn it. Someone else has to do it for you—and Jesus has done it for you. He has earned salvation for you. That’s God’s grace: unmerited favor. The Scripture says in Ephesians, “It is by grace you have been saved through faith—not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, so that no one may boast.” Listen to it again: “It is by grace you have been saved through faith.” God’s grace—God initiated your salvation; he enabled you to turn and to believe in the name of Jesus Christ. So God is saying, “It’s by his grace you can be saved, through faith in Jesus.” It’s not faith in yourself, or in your church, or in anybody else, but it has to be faith in Jesus of Nazareth, God’s Son, his one and only Son. It will be by grace that you’ve been saved, through faith—not of yourselves—it is the gift of God, so that no man may boast. Hallelujah! No one can stand before God in heaven and say, “I deserve it because I did such and such.” No—we all say, “Thank you for the blood of Jesus. Thank you for the Son of God. Praise your name, oh God, you are a Savior, a great Savior.” This is essentially what the book of Ephesians is about: God’s amazing grace and the power he has given us to live the Christian life. And then he goes on to give instruction about how to live that Christian life—and there are upwards of 40+ instructions in the book about living the Christian life. But it’s done from a place of love now: now that I’m saved, now that I’m born again, I want to obey Jesus; I want to follow him; I want to put his word into practice. It’s not coming from a place of legalism, or rules, or regulations, or fear, or “I must do this,” or “no.” It’s “Lord, thank you so much. No—I want to live like you. I want to imitate Jesus. I’m going to live like Jesus lives.” That’s how the book of Ephesians works itself out. It covers families and marriages and covers how to deal with the powers and principles in the evil realm. We pray; we pray and we pray; we put on the full armor of God and we stand in God’s strength and not in our own strength. Because the reality is—even if you don’t believe it—this world is a materialistic world, but the Bible says clearly there are powers and rulers and principalities of darkness in the unseen realm. There are lots of things that exist today that we don’t see and yet we believe in, such as gravity or the wind—but there’s also the unseen spiritual realm, and there are forces of wickedness in that unseen realm. They want to destroy you, but Jesus Christ is stronger. He is the highest name above every name, and the Bible says that one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.My prayer today is that the church in Cork, and all the churches in Cork, would be like the church in Ephesus: having a burning desire for the love of Jesus, and a desire to know him more, to know him more, to mature in the knowledge of Jesus, to grow up in their faith, and to be productive and fruitful for the Lord—in Cork, in Ireland.&nbsp;

<h3> </h3><h3>Jesus Didn't Come to Judge — But His Words Will</h3> We hear a lot about Jesus these days. People say He was a good teacher. A moral example. Someone who accepted everyone and judged no one. And on that last point? They're actually half right.Jesus Himself said He didn't come to judge the world. But He also said something else that might surprise you—something that changes everything about how we read those red letters in our Bibles. Let's look at what He actually claimed.<h3>What Jesus Actually Said</h3> In John's gospel, we find one of the most misunderstood passages in Scripture. Jesus is speaking, and He makes a statement that seems almost contradictory at first glance:"If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words. The very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day. For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken." — John 12:47-49 (NIV) Read that carefully. Jesus says, "I didn't come to judge." Full stop. His mission wasn't condemnation. It was rescue. But then He drops the hammer: The words I spoke? Those will judge you. Not Him. His words.<h3>So What's He Saving Us From?</h3> If Jesus came to save, we have to ask the obvious question: Save us from what? From eternal death. From being separated from God forever. From the thing we actually deserve but could never fix on our own.That's the rescue mission. And here's the part that makes people uncomfortable: You have to accept His words to be saved. Not just hear them. Not just respect them from a distance. Accept them. Let them change you. Let them rewire how you think about God, about yourself, about sin, about everything. Jesus didn't stutter on this. He made it plain.<h3>Here's the Thing People Miss</h3> There's one God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And that one God sent His Son to be the Savior. Not the accuser. The Savior. But when you reject the Son's words? You're not just rejecting a good teacher from ancient history. You're rejecting the Father who sent Him."There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words." That's Jesus talking. Not me. Not some preacher. Jesus. The rejection itself becomes the evidence. The words He spoke—the very words that could have saved you—become the witness that condemns you on the last day. Think about that. The same words that offer life become the judge if you walk away.<h3>What This Means for You Right Now</h3> Jesus didn't show up swinging a gavel. He didn't come to earth to find reasons to shut people out. He came to find reasons to bring them in. He came offering rescue. Rescue from sin. Rescue from death. Rescue from the enemy's grip. Rescue from the separation you feel but maybe can't even name.But here's the thing about rescue: You have to want it. You have to hear His words and keep them. Not perfectly. Not without stumbling. But really? Actually? Let them matter. Because those words? They're not going anywhere. They'll still be standing on the last day. And if you rejected them here? They'll testify against you there.A Final Word Don't wait for the last day to figure this out. Jesus is ready to save right now. He's always been ready. Solomon had the palaces, the gold, the influence, and the sheer brainpower to outthink anyone in the room. He lived the life we’re told to crave.But here’s the part that sticks with you: at the end of the road, Solomon looked at his mountain of gold and basically shrugged. His takeaway? “It’s meaningless. All of it.”<h3>The Exhausting Chase</h3> Solomon didn’t just dip his toes into pleasure; he dove in headfirst. Whether it was wine, massive building projects, or every luxury imaginable, he tested it all. He’s the one who turns that "chasing the wind" into a walk with actual direction.<h3>A Different Kind of Fear</h3> When Solomon says to "Fear God," he isn't talking about being terrified. He’s talking about a deep, life-altering respect. It’s about looking at the Creator and saying, “You’re God. I’m not. I’m ready to listen.”Jesus is calling us out of that cycle of chasing shadows. You don’t have to wait until you’ve "tried it all" and ended up burnt out and empty like Solomon did. You can find that "life to the full" that John 10:10 promises right now.The world is always going to ask for more and give back less. Jesus does the opposite.&nbsp;
