Most of us grew up with the idea that Satan rules from a fiery pit somewhere deep underground — pitchfork, horns, the whole lot. But the Bible actually says something very different.Satan doesn’t live in hell. Not yet. Right now, he’s very active in a spiritual realm much closer than most people realise.The Real Location: “Prince of the Power of the Air So if he’s not in hell, where is he?The Bible says he works in the heavenly realms — not Heaven where God dwells, but the unseen spiritual world around us. Paul makes it clear in Ephesians 6:12:“We don’t wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”That means our struggles aren’t mainly against people or politics but against unseen powers working behind the scenes. Paul even calls Satan “the prince of the power of the air” (Ephesians 2:2).He’s not buried under the earth — he’s influencing life right here, shaping culture, thoughts, and systems. That’s why things often feel dark or off‑kilter in our world.&nbsp; “The God of This World” It’s hard to hear, but the Bible also calls Satan “the god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4).Not because he deserves it, but because humanity, by turning from God, ended up under his influence. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7 It’s not about fighting harder in your own strength. It’s about staying close to God and walking under His authority.Peter echoes it:“Resist him, firm in your faith.” — 1 Peter 5:9 That faith — grounded in who God is and what He’s said — makes the enemy powerless.&nbsp; If You’re Not a Christian Maybe this is new to you. Maybe you’ve never thought much about spiritual things. But here’s the truth: you don’t have to live under deception.Paul wrote:“We plead with you on Christ’s behalf — be reconciled to God.” — 2 Corinthians 5:20 That means turning around — leaving darkness and stepping into the light of Jesus.The Bible says:“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” — Romans 10:13 It’s not about religion or pretending to be perfect. It’s about trust — turning from the deceiver and putting your faith in the One who gave His life to set you free.Jesus didn’t come to frighten you with hell. He came to rescue you from it.&nbsp; Satan is active, yes — but defeated.Because “greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” — 1 John 4:4You don’t need to fear the enemy when the Lion of Judah lives inside you.So stand firm. <h3>My Journey to Knowing God</h3> When I grew up in North Cork, there was plenty of religion. We know if you're Irish, there's loads of religion in Ireland. But what I didn't have when I grew up—which I've come to know now—is that you can have a relationship with God, which is so vastly different to religion.Religion is a set of dos and don'ts. It's a set of rules, and it's not personal. It's not engaged with a living God. You're not in relationship with the living God.<h3>Discovering Truth</h3> As I grew up in Cork and started to enter into my adult years, I wanted to know truth—real truth, spiritual truth. Who is God? Can I know Him? Does He know me?That's when I came across the Jesus that I read about in the New Testament in the Bible.<h3>The Book of Ephesians</h3> One of the books in the Bible's New Testament is called the Book of Ephesians. It was written by Paul when he was in jail in Rome. It was written to an Ephesian church—a small church in Ephesus, which is in Turkey.The primary purpose of the letter, which is inspired ultimately by the Holy Spirit, was to remind the Christians there—to remind those who believed in Jesus Christ—that it was because God had loved them and desired to save them and be in a relationship with them that He had sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on a cross to pay for their sins: past, present, and future.This was an amazing revelation to me.<h3>God as Father</h3> The letter went on to say that God would now become your Father if you believed in Jesus. God would adopt you into His family. You would have eternal life.That was such good news! Because all I believed was that whether you're religious or not, you just die and that was the end. Maybe you even go to hell because I was never good enough to get into heaven. And the Bible says that's true—it says that all have sinned and fall short of God's glory.<h3>My Search for Salvation</h3> As I went about my life in Cork and in UCC and so on and so forth, in all the ways of my normal life just like anyone else, I began to wonder: How can I get saved? How can I have eternal life? Is this Jesus true? Is He who He says He is?To my absolute joy and wonder and amazement, Jesus began to reveal Himself to me through the Scriptures. As I read the Bible—the New Testament especially—I began to see Him. As I said, in this Book of Ephesians, I saw the amazing promises of the resurrected Jesus:<h3>The fact that Jesus has defeated death</h3> That He didn't stay in the grave—He only stayed there three days God raised Him from the dead After meeting His disciples for 40 days, He went back into heaven The Bible says that in heaven, He intercedes for us. In heaven, He's proclaiming and saying to the Father and the Holy Spirit: "My blood pays for Barry's sins—past, present, and future."<h3>This is really good news.</h3>Understanding God's Love and Grace As you read through the Book of Ephesians, you see that it's God's intention in the book that you and I understand the depth of His love—the height and the width of this amazing love.God speaks about His grace. Grace is something that's given to people who don't deserve it. We don't deserve God's grace. I don't deserve God's grace. It was given to me because of God's kindness and mercy and love.Yet you see His justice in this—that sin has to be punished. My sin has to be paid for, and your sin has to be paid for. This is a spiritual truth, something grounded in the personality and in the heart of God. There has to be justice.The Cross: Justice and Mercy So how can God both forgive and also have justice? We see it at the cross.What God wants us to understand is that there has to be payment for sin. Jesus paid for that sin with His blood. He died a brutal and horrible death, and in this way, He can then forgive you and me.There is an exchange, as it were. Your sin, my sin—all the wrongdoings, every thought, every action that's wicked and evil—is put onto Christ, and God punishes Jesus. So the cross shows the punishment of sin in Christ, and yet it also shows the love and mercy of God in Christ.Jesus now says: "I give My righteousness, My perfect moral character, to those who believe in Me—anyone who believes in Me."<h3>The Gift of Righteousness</h3> Jesus has given His perfect moral character to Barry Hannon, and I just have to believe in Him. I have to repent of my sin, my sinful life, my life of living independent of the Most High God, the Holy One of Israel, the One who is from everlasting to everlasting.He's revealed Himself to me, and He says: "Anyone who seeks Him will find Him."So if you seek God, you will find Him. Don't take my word for it. You call out to God. Pray to God. Ask God about Jesus. I guarantee you 100% that Jesus will reveal Himself to you.Jesus reveals Himself to people all over the world. He's saving people in Cork. He's saving people in Ireland. He's saving people all over the world. This is the gospel—it's good news!It's relational. By the power and the ministry of the Holy Spirit, we can come to know the living God.<h3>God's Amazing Grace</h3> Ephesians is such a wonderful book. It speaks about God's amazing grace, as I mentioned earlier. If we understand the grace of God, we will be eternally grateful. Eternally grateful.Because, you see, in the eyes of God and according to the Word of God:Every one of us deserves condemnation Every one of us have been handed over to sin and under the rule of Satan Every one of us fall short of His glory Therefore, we're without hope in this world We're dead in our sins and transgressions When we start from that point, we realize that we are hopeless. All the religion and all our own efforts are filthy rags before God and mean nothing to God in terms of earning salvation.We cannot earn our salvation. We cannot merit it in any way, shape, or form.<h3>You Cannot Earn Salvation</h3> When you go to work—whether it be in Ballincollig or Ballinhasig or Carrigaline or Cork City—you go to work and you earn your wages, and you're paid because you've earned them.God says: You cannot earn eternal life. You cannot earn your salvation. Someone else has to do it for you. And Jesus has done it for you. He's earned salvation for you. That's God's grace—unmerited favor.<h3>The Gift of Salvation</h3> The Scripture says in Ephesians: "It is by grace you have been saved through faith, not of yourselves. It is a gift of God, that no man may boast."Listen to it again: It is by grace you have been saved through faith. God's grace. God initiated your salvation. He enabled you to turn and to believe in the name of Jesus Christ.So God is saying: It's by His grace you can be saved through faith in Jesus. It's not faith in yourself or in your church or in anybody else, but it has to be faith in Jesus of Nazareth—God's Son, His one and only Son.It will be by grace you've been saved through faith, not of yourselves. It is a gift of God so that no man may boast.Hallelujah!No one can stand before God in heaven and say, "I deserve it because I did such and such." No! We all say: "Thank You for the blood of Jesus. Thank You for the Son of God. Praise Your name, O God. You're a Savior—a great Savior."<h3>Living the Christian Life</h3> This is essentially what the Book of Ephesians is about: God's amazing grace and the power He's given us to live the Christian life.Then He goes on to give instruction about how to live that Christian life. There are up to 40-plus instructions on living the Christian life, but it's done coming from a place of love.Now that I'm saved, now that I'm born again, I want to obey Jesus. I want to follow Him. I want to put His word into practice. It's not coming out of a place of legalism or rules or regulations or fear—"Well, I must do this."No! It's: "Lord, thank You so much! Now I want to live like You. I want to imitate Jesus. I'm going to live like Jesus lives."Practical Instructions<h3>The Unseen Realm</h3> Because the reality is—even if you don't believe it, and we live in such a materialistic world—the Bible says clearly there are powers and rulers and principalities of darkness in the unseen realm.There are lots of things that exist today that we don't see and yet believe in, such as gravity or the wind. But there's also the unseen realm, and there are forces of wickedness in that unseen realm. They want to destroy you.But Jesus Christ is stronger. He is the highest name above every name. And the Bible says one day every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.<h3>My Prayer for Cork</h3> So my prayer today is that the churches in Cork—and all the churches in Cork—would be like the church in Ephesus, that they would have a burning desire for the love of Jesus and a desire to know Him more, to know Him more, and to mature in the knowledge of Jesus, and to grow up in their faith, and to be productive and fruitful for the Lord in Cork and in Ireland.

<h3>Brief overview of the Bible</h3> Many people in Ireland have some familiarity with the Bible. We recognise the names—Abraham, Moses, David, Mary, Jesus. Yet for many, the Bible still feels like a difficult or disconnected book. Laws in one place, stories in another, poetry here and prophecy there.But the Bible itself tells us how it is meant to be read.After His resurrection, Jesus met two disciples walking the road to Emmaus. They knew the Scriptures, yet they were confused and disillusioned. Luke records what happened next:“Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself.” (Luke 24:27) Later that same day, Jesus said to the wider group of disciples:“Everything must be fulfilled that is written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” (Luke 24:44) According to Jesus Himself, the entire Bible has one central focus: Him. When this is understood, the Bible becomes clearer, more unified, and far easier to read.<h3>&nbsp; A Holy God and a Serious Problem</h3> The Bible begins not with humanity, but with God. God is holy, righteous, and morally perfect. He created the world good, ordered, and under His authority. Human beings were made in His image, to know Him and live under His loving rule.Sin, therefore, is not a small mistake or a personal weakness. Sin is rebellion against the Creator. It is refusing God’s authority and choosing our own way. The Bible does not soften this reality. Sin brings guilt, corruption, death, and separation from God.The wages of sin is death, and God would cease to be just if sin were ignored or dismissed. This is a hard truth, but without it, grace loses its meaning.<h3>&nbsp; God’s Rescue Plan Begins: The Call of Abraham</h3> God did not abandon the world after humanity’s rebellion. He acted with intention. He began His rescue plan by calling one man—Abraham.God called Abraham out of idolatry and promised that through his offspring, “all the nations of the earth would be blessed.” This promise was never only about land or ethnicity. It was about salvation coming through a particular family line.From the very beginning, God’s plan had the nations in view—including Ireland.<h3>&nbsp; Israel: A People Set Apart, Yet in Need of Rescue</h3> From Abraham came the nation of Israel. God redeemed them from slavery in Egypt and entered into covenant with them. He gave them His law, not as a ladder into heaven, but as a mirror to reveal His holiness and their sin.Israel was called to be a light to the nations. Yet their history shows a sobering truth: knowing God’s law does not give us the power to obey it. Like all humanity, Israel failed and fell repeatedly.Still, God remained faithful.<h3>&nbsp; The Prophets and the Promise of a Messiah</h3> Through Israel’s prophets, God spoke words of warning and hope. Judgment would come because of sin—but salvation would also come.The prophets spoke of a Messiah who would:Come from Abraham’s line Be born into the tribe of Judah Descend from King David Be righteous, yet suffer Rule as King, yet serve as a sacrifice This coming One would not merely reform Israel. He would deal with sin itself.Every sacrifice, every priest, every king, and every prophet pointed forward to Him.<h3>&nbsp; Jesus Christ: God’s Plan Fulfilled</h3> When Jesus was born, He did not arrive by chance. He came at the right time, into the right family, in the right place—exactly as God had planned.Born under the law, a son of David and a son of Abraham, Jesus lived the sinless life humanity failed to live. At the cross, God’s justice and mercy met. Sin was punished, Satan was disarmed, and forgiveness was secured.If sin could have been forgiven any other way, the cross would have been unnecessary. The cross shows us both how serious sin is and how great God’s love truly is.<h3>&nbsp; Grace That Is Truly Amazing</h3> Grace is not God overlooking sin; it is God dealing with sin at infinite cost to Himself. Those who trust in Jesus are not excused—they are justified. God declares guilty sinners righteous because their sin has been fully punished in Christ.This is why grace is so astonishing. It is undeserved, costly, and complete.&nbsp; The Bible Ends Where It Began: God With His People The Bible ends with Christ returning as King and Judge. Evil will be judged, creation renewed, and God will dwell with His people forever.For those who belong to Christ, judgment has already fallen—at the cross.<h3>&nbsp; An Invitation to Read the Bible — and Meet Christ</h3> When the Bible is read with Jesus at its centre, it becomes clear and compelling. It is not primarily a book about what we must do for God, but about what God has done for us in Christ.The Bible’s story leads to a Person. That Person still calls sinners to repent, believe, and live.If you have never read the Bible this way, begin again—with Jesus at the centre—and you will discover that it is not only God’s Word, but God’s invitation.

<h3>A Courtroom on Anglesea Street</h3> I remember going to court to support a young man who had got into trouble with the law. I walked with him to the Cork Courthouse on Anglesea Street, a judicial facility in Cork City Centre that deals with criminal matters.That day was filled with trepidation—both for him and for me. The atmosphere was heavy with shame, guilt, anger, and fear. This was the place where the saying “do the crime, do the time” became painfully real.Here, the law of the land would expose you for what you had done. If you were found guilty, there was no hiding. It was black and white.Strangely, I almost felt guilty for something I never did.<h3>&nbsp; The Human Sense of Guilt</h3> Have you ever experienced that sudden wave of guilt when a Garda stops you—only to realise he’s checking your tax disc? It’s fleeting, irrational, but very real.Why do we react like that?Because guilt is wired into the human condition.According to God’s Word, we are guilty before a far greater authority than any earthly court. We have rebelled against God, sinned against Him, and rejected Him. We fall short of His glorious moral perfection.The Bible tells us that, by nature, we are God’s enemies.<h3>&nbsp; The Verdict of the Ultimate Lawgiver</h3> God is the ultimate Lawgiver, and His verdict is just. “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). Apart from Christ, we would have to pay the price for our sins for eternity.Justice demands punishment.And that is precisely why the Gospel is such good news.<h3>&nbsp; The Cross and the Defeat of Satan</h3> In mercy and love, the Lord Jesus Christ took the punishment for our sins upon Himself at the cross. He stood in our place.The accusations that stood against us were nailed to the cross with Him.At Calvary, Jesus disarmed the barrister from hell—the accuser, Satan—who held our sins over our heads. We had no advocate before God, but Christ became our defender.The cross silenced the devil.&nbsp; The Only Way to Be Reconciled to God Jesus’ death on the cross is the only way mankind can be reconciled to God. It is the only way God can declare guilty sinners righteous in His sight.When you stop and think about it, you see the extraordinary love of God: He handed over His innocent Son so that we might go free.For those who receive Christ as Lord and Saviour, God declares them not guilty. Justice has been fully satisfied because Jesus paid the price in full.Oh, what a Saviour He is.<h3>&nbsp; Freedom From Accusation and Fear of Death</h3> That day, the young man’s court case was re-scheduled for technical reasons. But for humanity, there is only one way to silence Satan’s accusations and be freed from the fear of death.It is to call upon the name of the Lord.Jesus Christ desires to save. His blood, applied personally by faith, cancels the legal debt written against us. That debt has been nailed to the cross. The accusations are buried with Christ.And just as He rose again in newness of life, so too can we receive new life in Him. Our sins are removed forever.&nbsp; An Invitation to Respond What an amazing God we serve. What an amazing Gospel.If you have not yet turned to Jesus Christ, I urge you to do so today. Call on His name and be saved.
